Critical thinking is a set of disciplined moves, not a personality trait and not permanent suspicion. These lessons teach each move deeply enough to use on claims you support, oppose or do not yet understand.

Knowing the vocabulary is not mastery. The test is whether you can apply the same rule when it weakens a conclusion you prefer.
01Critical-thinking lessonState the precise claimTurn a powerful but vague narrative into a sentence that can succeed or fail.+
Core principle
You cannot test a mood, suspicion or worldview. You can test a defined proposition about an actor, action, mechanism and time period.
“Outlet X knowingly published false report Y on date Z after receiving correction A.” This can be investigated.
Worked example
“They are controlling everything through digital identity.”
“EU institutions designed the Digital Identity Wallet to track every transaction made by all users.”
Why this is better: The revision identifies an actor, system, alleged intention, behaviour and scope. Evidence can now count for or against it.
Use the method
- Circle vague actors: they, elites, the system, authorities, mainstream media.
- Replace each with a named person, organisation or decision-making body.
- Add the alleged action, mechanism, time period and affected population.
- Split bundled claims until each sentence could receive its own verdict.

Can a reasonable person describe what evidence would contradict your sentence? If not, it is not precise enough.
02Critical-thinking lessonSeparate observation from interpretationPrevent a real fact from silently becoming an unsupported explanation.+
Core principle
Observations are records or measurements. Interpretations assign meaning, cause, intention or significance. Both matter, but they carry different burdens of proof.
A document was signed, prices rose, two accounts posted the same phrase, or a company earned revenue.
The document was a cover, the policy caused the price, the accounts coordinated, or profit proves prior intent.
Worked example
“Several outlets used identical wording, proving they received the same orders.”
“Several outlets used identical wording. They may share a wire-service source; coordination requires separate evidence.”
Why this is better: The similarity survives as an observation. The explanation becomes one hypothesis among several rather than a fact hidden inside the sentence.
Use the method
- Write only what a camera, record, measurement or direct quotation could establish.
- Underline words implying motive, causation, coordination, meaning or inevitability.
- Move those words into a separate ‘interpretation’ sentence.
- Ask what additional evidence the interpretation requires.

Can the observation remain true while your preferred interpretation is false? If yes, keep them separate.
03Critical-thinking lessonFind the fact kernelAcknowledge what is real without granting the entire narrative.+
Core principle
Persuasive overclaims often grow around a true, plausible or historically grounded element. Identifying it improves fairness and shows exactly where the reasoning expands beyond the evidence.
“Nothing about this is true.” This invites an easy rebuttal when one genuine fact is produced.
“The institution has influence. The evidence does not yet establish command authority.”
Worked example
“WEF is a world government because national leaders attend its meetings.”
“WEF has elite access and agenda-setting influence. Attendance does not by itself establish that it commands governments.”
Why this is better: The improved version preserves the legitimate concern while isolating the much stronger control claim.
Use the method
- Identify the strongest documented element, even if it is inconvenient to your conclusion.
- State exactly what that element supports.
- Name the additional conclusion the narrative builds on top of it.
- List the missing links between the kernel and the total explanation.

04Critical-thinking lessonMap the causal chainReplace “it is obvious” with the sequence that would actually have to occur.+
Core principle
Causal explanations need more than sequence, motive or benefit. They need a plausible mechanism connecting decisions, resources, actions and effects.
X happened before Y; actor A benefited; system B had a vulnerability; organisation C had capability.
A decided, communicated, resourced and executed action X through mechanism M, producing measurable effect Y.
Worked example
“ACER caused Norwegian electricity prices because Norway adopted European market rules.”
“European rules affect market design; hourly prices also emerge through supply, demand, hydrology, grid constraints and exchange.”
Why this is better: The revision opens the black box and asks how much each mechanism contributes rather than making one institution a causal placeholder.
Use the method
- Write the alleged starting decision and final outcome.
- Insert every necessary link: communication, authority, resources, implementation and transmission mechanism.
- For each arrow, record the evidence that the link occurred—not merely that it was possible.
- Look for comparison cases where the cause was absent or the outcome differed.

05Critical-thinking lessonGenerate competing explanationsTest whether your preferred story explains more than its rivals.+
Core principle
Evidence rarely arrives labelled with its cause. A strong assessment compares explanations that could produce the same observation and asks which requires the fewest unsupported assumptions.
“The opposite side is right.” Reversing the verdict is not the same as generating explanations.
Error, parallel incentives, imitation, selection, bureaucracy, coincidence, local decisions or partial coordination.
Worked example
“Identical messages prove central coordination.”
“Possible explanations include a common source, copying, shared incentives, platform trends, explicit coordination or coincidence.”
Why this is better: Each candidate predicts different traces. Coordination should produce communication or operational linkage; copying should trace back to an earlier source.
Use the method
- Generate at least three mechanisms, including one ordinary and one uncomfortable alternative.
- Ask what each explanation uniquely predicts.
- Compare how many unsupported assumptions each requires.
- Prefer the explanation with greater explanatory reach—not the one that feels morally satisfying.

06Critical-thinking lessonCheck source independenceCount evidence lines instead of links, headlines or repetitions.+
Core principle
Corroboration occurs when sources with separate access or methods reach compatible findings. Repetition from one origin increases visibility, not evidential independence.
Twenty articles quote the same agency statement, anonymous account or press report.
Documents, direct observations, datasets or witnesses with genuinely separate access converge.
Worked example
“Five newspapers confirmed the allegation.”
“Five newspapers reported it, but four cite the first article and the fifth cites the same unnamed official.”
Why this is better: The apparent five-source case collapses to one originating testimony. That source may still be valuable, but it has not been independently corroborated.
Use the method
- Trace every citation backwards until you reach the underlying evidence.
- Draw a source tree and merge branches that share the same origin.
- Distinguish independent access from independent publication.
- Check whether quoted experts rely on the same dataset, briefing or assumption.

07Critical-thinking lessonSearch for disconfirming evidenceGive reality a genuine opportunity to reduce your confidence.+
Core principle
A claim is not meaningfully tested when every possible observation confirms it. Strong reasoning names what should be seen if the claim is false and actively searches for it.
Looking for weak critics, hostile motives or exceptions that can be explained away.
Seeking the strongest evidence that would be surprising if your explanation were correct.
Worked example
“No documents exist because the operation was perfectly concealed.”
“A concealed operation may leave little documentation, but its scale should still predict participants, resources, inconsistencies or operational traces.”
Why this is better: The claim is exposed to possible failure instead of using missing evidence as confirmation.
Use the method
- Write the stop question before searching: what would lower confidence?
- Search using terms a well-informed critic would use, not only your own framing.
- Seek the strongest version of the contrary evidence and verify its provenance.
- Update the assessment rather than merely adding a disclaimer.

08Critical-thinking lessonCalibrate the conclusionMake the strength of your language match the strength of the evidence.+
Core principle
The goal is not maximum certainty. It is minimum distortion: a conclusion strong enough to guide judgement but weak enough to remain revisable.
True or false, exposed or debunked, trust or reject. Useful in some cases, destructive when uncertainty is material.
Documented, probable, possible, mixed, misleading, unsupported, contradicted or currently unresolved.
Worked example
“The lab-leak theory was debunked” or “the lab leak is proven.”
“Available scientific evidence favours zoonotic transmission; an accidental research-related event remains unproven and could not be ruled out with unavailable records.”
Why this is better: The assessment distinguishes hypotheses, weighs current evidence and preserves the specific uncertainty.
Use the method
- Return to the precise claim and assess only that sentence.
- Separate evidence quality, explanatory fit and remaining uncertainty.
- Choose a calibrated category and state confidence as a range when useful.
- Record the strongest reason for doubt and the evidence that could change the assessment.
